Dr. Shahram Tafazoli is the Founding CEO of Motion Metrics, a private Canadian corporation dedicated to developing intuitive, reliable, and cutting-edge camera and sensor-based monitoring solutions. These solutions aim at “extending machine senses” to enhance safety and efficiency of worldwide mining and quarry operations. Motion Metrics has deployed its innovative solutions in more than 50 mines in Chile, USA, Canada, Peru, Australia, Indonesia, UK, South Africa, and the Middle East digging copper, iron, gold, diamond, coal, and nickel. Dr. Tafazoli holds bachelor and master’s degrees from Sharif University of Technology in Iran and a PhD from the University of British Columbia (UBC), all in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) with a focus on control systems, estimation theory, and robotics. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia’s ECE department and has offered courses in control systems, robotics, and digital signal processing. Dr. Tafazoli has a passion for technology and has invested in several Canadian startups, including Creative Destruction Lab alumni Push Strength, Whirlscape, Lumotune, and Perceptiv Labs. He is co-inventor of several patented technologies with other engineers from Motion Metrics. He recently received the UBC Applied Science Dean’s Medal of Distinction.
