For most of his career, Mike has dedicated himself to investing in and mentoring early-stage companies, lending his experience to fostering their long-term success. Mike has been a founder or early stage principle investor and Director of companies in the energy, software, medical device and property development sectors.

Most recently, Mike served as Chairman of Solium Capital Inc. the global leading provider of software for corporate equity plan administration. Solium was sold in 2019 to Morgan Stanley. Other current initiatives include: JEMM, a Calgary based urban property developer; SmartBe, a wealth management firm focussed on quant-based investing, via an ETF on the TSX; Katipult, which is enabling private equity firms to include retail investors as sources of capital; Rival Technologies, which is re-shaping how marketing research can be conducted through technology; and Leankor, which is transforming project management for the Fortune 500 sector with enterprise grade software.

Past initiatives include: Cority (global leader in occupational health & safety SAAS software, sold to a P.E. consortium in 2019); Southern Lights of NZ (bio-medical materials processor, sold to a UK public company in 2015); Curve Dental (cloud-based dental software, sold to a V.C. firm in 2018); InnerVision Medical Technologies (imaging science sold to a medical industry conglomerate in 2016); and Peyto (the Calgary based oil and gas producer, founded in 1998). These are all businesses for which Mike was a founder or early-stage investor and a Board member. In addition, Mike spent 15 years in the deregulated merchant energy business, rising up the industry ranks to become the CEO of Engage Energy, which was subsequently sold to Duke Energy in 2002.

Mike has an Engineering degree and an MBA from the University of Alberta.
Not for profit activities include being a past Chair of Calgary’s largest minor hockey association, and fundraising Chair for the building of a new arena in Calgary. As of fall 2019, Mike will have joined the Board of CAWST (Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology), a not for profit engineering firm that brings clean water and sanitation solutions to the developing world.
Mike and his wife Jacquie have two adult children; and they like to travel the world, usually from the vantage point of a tandem bicycle.
