After 10 years working in healthcare in emerging markets, Joel Finlayson is convinced that the combination of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship can help solve many of the world’s most pressing and complicated healthcare challenges.
Joel is a former career consultant and partner with PwC and Monitor Group and now leads a healthcare investment and development company focused on the markets and challenges of the Middle East and Africa.
His job is to support and operationalize new ventures; execute partnerships and collaborations between new entrants into healthcare, incumbent operators, and governments; and sometimes invest directly in promising new healthcare companies.
His partners and clients include the Mayo Clinic and Davita Healthcare; Apple and IBM Watson for Health; Health 2.0; and leading providers of primary care, homecare, school health, advanced imaging, medical education and training, and remote patient monitoring.
He works to improve healthcare, often by utilizing and commercializing innovative services and technologies such as telehealth; mobile imaging; point-of-care diagnostics; IoT; and AI-, ML-, and NLP-enabled care, which he believes will truly drive “Universal Healthcare.”
He is also an active investor, champion, and director of several Canadian healthcare startups including Perimeter Medical Imaging, CyclicaRX, SkiiN, and a healthcare blockchain initiative. He is an advisor and LP at Greensky Capital and Roadmap Capital, a former director of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and a past president of the Canadian Business Network in Saudi Arabia.
Joel has a degree in Politics and Economics from Dalhousie University in Canada and an MBA from the University of Cambridge in the UK.
