For more than twenty years Doug Buchanan was Managing Director & CEO of BC Biomedical Laboratories Ltd. where he led major changes in the organization including a significant streamlining, several acquisitions, and the development of a leading-edge laboratory. Doug substantially strengthened the customer-culture of the organization which during his tenure was consistently ranked among the ’50 Best Employers in Canada’.
Following the purchase of BC Biomedical by LifeLabs in 2013, Doug joined the leadership team of the new combined organization to lead the resulting transformation. Doug was subsequently appointed Senior VP Office of Strategy Management.
Other stops along Mr. Buchanan’s career journey have included Sandwell Engineering where he ran the organization’s global consulting practice and The WATCOM Group, a software development company spun off from the University of Waterloo where Doug led all marketing and sales activities. As a Partner at Price Waterhouse Management Consultants for a major portion of his working life, he supported clients worldwide in strategic management, business competitiveness, market research and project feasibility assessment.
Doug is educated in the sciences and business (B.Sc. Hon Physics, M.Sc. Biology, MBA), is an ICD.D (certified Director by the Institute of Corporate Directors) and enjoys helping organizations as a Board member. This includes Augurex Life Sciences Corp., Excelleris Technologies, Ainsworth Lumber, Chirologix Pharmaceuticals Inc., Ronald McDonald House.
Following his retirement in 2015, Mr. Buchanan has dedicated time to helping new enterprises through Entrepreneurship UBC and the Creative Destruction Lab. Most recently he has chaired the Canadian Digital Technology Supercluster’s Project Selection Committee funding more than 40 initiatives responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
