Derrick Hunter is the president of Bluesky Equities Ltd., an investment management company with interests in real estate, energy, distilling, and alternative strategies. Over the past two decades, he has founded or cofounded 14 companies, mostly engaged in petroleum exploration and technology. In 2008, he founded a private real-estate investment company, which currently owns several thousand apartment units located throughout the southern United States. He has been an active member of the local angel investment community for the past ten years. Bluesky Equities is one of the most active angel investors in Southern Alberta, having invested in more than two dozen local startup businesses during that period. Derrick currently sits on the boards of several private companies and is also a trustee of the Hunter Family Foundation, which in 2013 made a transformative gift to the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary when it created the “Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.” In May 2017, the Hunter Family Foundation announced the creation of the “Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking,” which will increase the scope of the Hunter Center by an order of magnitude and offer programs in entrepreneurship across the University of Calgary campus. In the not-for-profit sector, he is a member of the Management Advisory Council at the Haskayne School of Business and the External Advisory Committee of the Hunter Center. He serves on the boards of Futurepreneur Canada, the Beakerhead Creative Society, the Alberta Cancer Foundation Charity Classic, and the University of Calgary Energy New Venture Competition. Previously the finance chair of the Calgary Chapter of Entrepreneurs Organization and founding treasurer of New Heights Early Learning Services Society, Derrick is a graduate of Queen’s University (BSc in Geology) and the University of Calgary (MBA – Finance) as well as a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and the Entrepreneurs Organization.
