Sonia Contera is a Professor of Biological Physics at the University of Oxford and a nanotechnologist. Her scientific work is focused on the physics at the interface of biology and nanotechnology. She is also an expert in atomic force microscopy. She has an interest in basic physical processes in biology such as the emergence of biological shapes (e.g. in tumours), and the role of mechanics (coupled with electricity) in the transmission of information in biological systems. The lab she leads at Oxford Physics also designs bioinspired smart nanostructured materials with applications in medicine, and more recently in architecture. She is the author of the bestselling book, Nano comes to life: How nanotechnology is transforming medicine and the future of biology (Princeton University Press, 2019).
